Title and meta description length that fits the SERP

Google truncates by pixel width, not just character count. Here’s how to stay readable on desktop and mobile.

Characters lie a little

Two 58-character titles can display differently. Wide letters and capitals eat pixels. That is why a pixel estimate sits next to the character count in the Title & Meta Checker.

Desktop titles usually survive near 580px. Mobile cuts earlier. Put the meaning in the first clause.

Descriptions need a complete thought

If the description is under 100 characters, you are leaving space on the table. If it is far over 160, Google will cut it or ignore it. End with a reason to click, not a dangling comma.

Check the live snippet, then the HTML

Paste title, description, and URL. Toggle desktop and mobile. Copy the generated tags only after the preview reads like a result you would click.

Frequently asked questions

Will Google use my exact title?

Often, not always. It may rewrite from headings or anchors. A clear title still wins most of the time.

Is 60 characters a hard limit?

No. It is a display guideline. A slightly longer title can still show in full if the glyphs are narrow.

Should I add the year?

Add a year only when freshness is the intent, such as a 2026 update. Otherwise it ages the listing.
