Simple workflow
How to generate an XML sitemap
Step 1
Add your URLs
Use the table or bulk-import one absolute URL per line. Homepage should usually be priority 1.0.
Step 2
Set lastmod and changefreq
Use real last-modified dates. Do not mark every URL as always/1.0.
Step 3
Download and submit
Upload sitemap.xml, reference it in robots.txt, and submit it in Google Search Console.
Frequently asked questions
How many URLs can a sitemap hold?
One file can list up to 50,000 URLs or 50 MB uncompressed. Split larger sites into a sitemap index.
Should I include noindex pages?
No. Sitemaps should only list URLs you want crawled and indexed.
Do I need lastmod?
It helps crawlers decide what changed. Fake dates can be ignored, so keep them honest.
Is a sitemap enough for indexing?
It is a hint, not a command. Pages still need to be crawlable, useful, and not blocked by robots.txt.
